Borrower insurance

Mortgage borrower insurance: compare, take out or switch your loan insurance

Borrower insurance (loan insurance, mortgage life insurance) protects you and your lender if life disrupts repayment. It weighs heavily on the total cost of a loan: choosing it carefully, or switching, can lighten your budget for years.

What is borrower insurance?

Borrower insurance covers all or part of the loan on death, total and irreversible loss of autonomy and, depending on options, work incapacity or disability. It is not mandatory by law, but lenders almost always require it for a mortgage.

Bank contract or individual contract?

You may join the bank’s group contract or choose an individual contract (“delegation”) as long as its cover is equivalent to what the lender requires. This is possible at signing and later: this is switching, or “substitution”.

What CSPM can look into

We review your cover from every angle, including profiles many contracts exclude.

  • Non-residents, including those living outside Europe (for example in the United States), depending on the file
  • A stay-at-home spouse or partner, whose loss would weigh heavily on the main insured
  • Senior borrowers: depending on available offers, cover up to age 89 at the end of the loan, subject to acceptance
  • Full cover: death, TPD, ITT, IPT, IPP, IPPRO, back, mental health, therapeutic part-time, premium waiver
  • Two premium logics: constant over the term (initial capital) or decreasing (outstanding capital)

More economical without cutting protection

A bank group contract is a standard product pooled across all its customers. An individual contract reflects your actual profile and can be noticeably cheaper for equivalent cover. Savings vary by age, profile, capital and term.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to take my bank’s insurance?

No. You can choose an individual contract if its cover is equivalent to what the bank requires, at signing or during the loan.

Can a non-resident be insured?

Depending on the file, yes. We review insurance for people living abroad, including outside Europe, subject to the insurer’s acceptance.
